Biological Approach to Healing

In the early 1990’s the veterinary team at Alamo Pintado began investigating potential biological therapies to improve the quality and the speed of bone, tendon, ligament and soft tissue healing in their patients. This led them to develop three modalities which included high quality nutrition, bone marrow derived autologous stem cell therapy and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. In 1996 Dr. Herthel developed a nutritional formula to speed healing in his patients. This formula was eventually named Platinum Performance by his wife Sue. He also pioneered a procedure to use the horse’s own bone marrow derived stem cells to treat tendon and ligament injuries. In 2001 he presented the results of the first 100 cases at the American Association of Equine Practitioners Annual Conference. To date over 5,000 bone marrowed derived stem cell procedures have been completed at Alamo Pintado. In 2000 Alamo Pintado installed the first Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber for a horse. Today these three biological modalities are referred to as the biological approach to healing, and are an integral part of practicing state of the art medicine everyday.
